Just as Americans discovered the Moon on July 20, 1969, so too Americans will discover Nunhead on July 20th, 2013.

Organized by Nunhead American Radio with Lewis Schaffer – the only radio programme for Americans living in Nunhead.

Saturday, 20th July 2013 at 2PM
Meeting Place: Corner Peckham Rye East and East Dulwich Road / Nunhead Lane, the southern side.
Ending at: 4PM Nunhead Green.

Beating the bounds is an ancient British tradition where the local people would come together to celebrate and demarcate the boundary of their parish.

Well over half of Nunheaders are of minority or immigrant stock, or have only moved into the community recently. Nunhead has no official boundary. Many of the newcomers don’t even know they are living in Nunhead.

We invite all of our fellow Nunheaders to participate in the first ever Nunhead Beats the Bounds – A Community Walking Event on the 20th of July 2013. Together we will walk our border with our neighbours.

This day-long event will promote cohesion, show that all of Nunhead is in walking distance, and define the shape of Nunhead for future generations.

THE MARCH: We will march from Peckham Rye to One Tree Hill, down Ivydale Road to Queens Road back up to Peckham Rye and around to Nunhead Green. Nunheaders young and old will pound the pavements, roads, trees and buildings with sticks. We will sing of Angels, William Blake, Queen Elizabeth, Dr. Harold Moody, and the other residents and visitors of Nunhead.

The procession will be headed by Lewis Schaffer, host of Nunhead American Radio, and the Dulwich Ukulele Club, with representatives from community and religious organisations from the constituent areas of Nunhead: Nunhead Village, Olde Nunhead, Nunhead Rye and Nunhead Heights.

It will take approximately 2 hours to do the 4.5 miles, culminating in an ‘Event of Nunhead Unity’ with music, comedy and picnics on Nunhead Green. Nunhead Beats the Bounds will be inclusive, interfaith, multicultural yet very, very British. All brought to you by the Americans of Nunhead.

  1. I have lived in Nunhead (as defined by Beating the Bounds) all my life and my father was born in Nunhead in 1916 and lived all his life within its “bounds” aswell.

I have no idea what is meant by “cohesion”. The “newcomers” referred to are mostly professional and middle-class persons, priced out of East Dulwich, and finding Nunhead an area of affordable properties that are likely to rise in value. That’s how far they are “Nunheaders”. There is no true basis for cohesion between them and people of minority ethnic groups or white British people living in Council housing in Nunhead and struggling to survive on benefits. People who live very different social and economic realities have little to be cohesive about.

Applying quaint archaic and folksy forms to Nunhead is a waste of public money.
