Wednesday 12:01 AM August 5th, 2014 Leith (almost Edinburgh)

Today, Wednesday, God willing, I am to act for the first time in over 40 years. The first time I performed in a play since I was in high school. It is the first Edinburgh preview of the new play Giant Leap starring famous comics Tom Stade and Phil Nichol. I am the “Not Famous” Lewis Schaffer.

I am surprised they haven’t  fired me.

I had forgotten how hard it is to memorize lines, and it is way harder at 58. I forgot how it is for me to stay on script. I forgot how I cannot drift off for a second or I will miss your cues. I forgot how mentally exhausting acting is.

I have a new found respect for anyone who can act but less respect for anyone who chooses to act. This acting is brutal and those actor people have to be crazier than comics.

Here is the news:

My Edinburgh Fringe Festival show Lewis Schaffer is Free until Famous, £5 at Just the Tonic Community Project starts Thursday August 6th and runs to end of August. Show time 17:35 (5:35PM) lasting for 50 minutes or a lifetime.

This year’s show will be the best ever or the worst. It is always is. Buy ten tickets or twenty. They are only £5 a pop and well worth it, or so I have been told by…

The most famous comedy critic in the UK, Bruce Dessau of the London Evening Standard, selected my show among the nine most exciting shows to at the Fringe.  This is high, high praise. Click here to read.

My local glossy magazine did a spread on me and the woods. Editor Victoria Purcell says “Brooklyn-born comedian Lewis Schaffer has adopted Nunhead as his very own and, prior to his trip to Edinburgh Fringe, he’s been busy campaigning to save Southwark Woods.” Click here.

I would pay to see how Lewis Schaffer is either brilliant or something far, far less. I feel a catastrophe coming. Really. Click on Giant Leap at the Pleasance Theatre, Edinburgh to buy a ticket. See if I survive. See if I win best newcomer award.

  1. Enjoyed your Edinburgh show on 22/8 – some bits reduced me to tears (of laughter)others made me cringe – but you were never boring. We can’t have been an easy audience to perform to.
